Qld: Labor seeks new candidates =2

Executive director, Queensland branch, Tim Gartrell said both he and Premier Peter
Beattie were very pleased with the number of would-be candidates for the Thuringowa seat.

Mr Gartrell, speaking from Townsville, said the meeting tonight with Thuringowa's electoral
council members would discuss the merits of respective candidates and allow him to gauge
what locals expected from their candidate.

He said that would be taken into account when the decision was being made.

Mr Gartrell said he would be reporting back to Mr Beattie tomorrow.

"We've received quite a number of expressions of interest, more than five in Thuringowa,
and the premier and I are pleased because it is obviously going to be a very competitive
field which increases our chances of getting a good candidate," Mr Gartrell said.
