EXPERTS AT CRISES, ISRAELIS CALMLY READY FOR IRAQ.(Main)

The merchants in this downtown shopping district along Ben Yehuda Street have been busy with their normal trade from the midday shoppers. The evening business at the cafes on Jaffa Street have their usual evening crowds.

And in Tel Aviv last week, more than 120,000 people gathered for a pop concert. In Eilat, the crowds at a jazz festival surprised even the most optimistic estimates.

The surface appearance of calm barely hides a heightened level of concern throughout Israel over the continuing crisis in the Persian Gulf.

The city of Tel Aviv, for instance, is rechecking the condition of its 300 bomb shelters. Bomb shelters are mandatory in all Israeli apartment buildings. And the city has recently distributed detailed civil defense brochures to all residents.

Israelis, who pride themselves on being prepared to meet the sudden changes that might throw them into instant battle in this sea of uncertainty, have new preparations to make.
