Mateo headed to pen after victorious debut

Rookie right-hander Juan Mateo will have to wait for his nextmajor-league start. He's moving to the bullpen with a day off in theschedule today.

Mateo, 23, called up last week from Class AA West Tenn after ToddWalker and Greg Maddux were traded, won his major-league debutThursday in the second game of a doubleheader against the ArizonaDiamondbacks. But manager Dusty Baker said Mateo will be betterserved for now in the bullpen with a fifth starter not needed for thetime being.

"It gives him a chance to be where he is best-suited for now,"Baker said. "He needs to work on a second pitch to be an effectivestarter, so he's best-suited for the bullpen now." …
