Fed: DVT clot buster cleared by govt
A medication which treats and prevents deep vein thrombosis has been approved for subsidyby the federal government.
The prophylaxis medication will be available from today on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
Sydney-based haematologist Dr TIMOTHY BRIGHTON says 9,000 Australians die each yearfrom pulmonary embolism -- a blood clot that travels from the leg to the lung.
And he says more than 28,000 Australians develop the condition each year without everstepping onto an aeroplane.
Dr BRIGHTON says a majority of Australians still associated DVT exclusively with so-calledeconomy class syndrome.
But he says the chance of developing a fatal DVT on an aeroplane flight is less thanone in a million compared to one in ten hospital deaths being attributed to DVT.
